Coromandel Peninsula –
Things to do and see

Hot Water Beach

Only 8 minutes drive away (15km) is the famous Hot Water Beach. Listed in the "AA's" 101 Must-do Weekends get digging and lounge in the thermally heated salt water. For two hours either side of low tide at this Coromandel beach, a solid sand dig will unearth hot spring water to feed your very own beachside pool.

This is also a fabulous surf beach. So, while you relax you can watch your surfing buddies challenge the sea.

Hahei and Cathedral Cove

By car Hahei 12 mintues drive (18km) and is surely one of the most attractive places to be in New Zealand. The offshore islands provide protection for the beaches around Hahei. The waters offshore and the islands have been incorporated as a marine park and offer some excellent diving.

Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, Te Whanganui-A-Hei, covers 9 square kilometres and is New Zealand's sixth marine reserve. It is administered by the Department of Conservation.

This site was chosen for a marine reserve because of the rich and varied habitats associated with the coastline and outlying islands. Reefs of hard rock, soft sediments, intricate caves and underwater arches provide homes for complex communities of plants, crustacea, moluscs and fish.

Whitianga

Whitianga is 20 minutes (21km) drive and is the main shopping centre for the area.  Main supermarket and thriving busy coastal town with great restaurants, gift and apparel shops, as well as the expanse of Buffalo beach.  A great sandy and very safe beach for children and families.  Take a trip on the Ferry over to Ferry Landing, chill out at the Salt Bar or cruise the shops and cafes.
